As one of the more affluent suburbs of Northern California — the median annual salary is over $91,000 — Marin county seems like the last place you’d need to think about bail bonds. While it’s not in Silicon Valley, there are some pretty heavy hitters in terms of tech in the town, like AutoDesk as well as George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch.

But like insurance, bail bonds aren’t something you think you’ll need. It’s something that’s there when you need it, but it’s out of sight and out of mind. (There are a few other connections to insurance, but we’ll return to that.)

As anyone who’s watched a cop show knows, you only have “one phone call.” If you were in that situation, who would you call? Your wife? Your best friend? Your kids? Do any of them have the cash to bail you out? In some cases, bail could be a few hundred dollars. But in some cases, bail could hit the tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Know any friends with that kind of money?

There is a second option. A bail bond company. For a fee of ten percent of the total bail amount, a bail bond company can promise the court that you’ll be there for all your future court hearings. You’ll be at home, with your family and friends, instead of languishing in jail. How is this done? The company has a relationship with an insurance company that issues a “surety bond” to the court.

In some cases, especially in cases where the crime may make someone think about fleeing the country, the bail bond company may also require collateral in the form of property. It’s additional assurance that the person in question will make it to their trial.

This bond promises the court that you will appear on your court date. If you don’t the court will issue a warrant for your arrest. The bail bond company will now be on the hook for the total bail amount and they will hire bounty hunters to find you and to return you to the court.

However, most people make their court hearings without incident. The bail bonds company helps to keep them with their family and out of jail while they await that date.

If you feel you need the services of a bail bond company in Marin County, don’t hesitate to contact a bail bond specialist to find out what your options are now!
